About Ruth

29/8/70 – 26/2/22

Ruth was the author and creator of The Baby Morris Brand.

Below is her career autobiography

She began her career with children and their families at University in Western Australia, where she studied dual Associate Degrees in Social Science (Child and Family) and Applied Science (Consumer Science). Later, whilst living in the United Kingdom, she worked with children in the preschool years and it was there that she became aware of Dr Maria Montessori and her theoretical study of human development.  With its scientific basis and having watched the pedagogy in action she immediately knew it was for her. In 1996 she returned to Australia to study Montessori Method and for the following nineteen years, she honed her skills as a Montessori facilitator, primary school literacy tutor, parent and carer consultant, conference presenter, and magazine and book writer. Her book series The Parenting 5 sold over 20,000 copies both nationally and internationally.

Using all the theoretical knowledge she had garnered, and through careful observation, programming, and activity presentation, she became increasingly successful in working with children who had movement, sensory, or language deficits.

In 2016 she enrolled at University to study Occupational Therapy part-time, she had completed three and a half years of the four-year Bachelor, inclusive of all pediatric and sensory-motor units.  Congruently she continued to sharpen her skills and only worked with children who had an extra need.

Ruth specialised in facilitating movement (gross and fine) and sensory experiences for children before literacy and numeracy and then presenting literacy and numeracy studies in a very special way. She built the skills needed for developmental delay or learning issues - having worked with ADHD, Anxiety Disorder, Autism Spectrum, Chromosome 17q Deletion, Down Syndrome, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Global Delay, Gross, and Fine Motor Delay, Hearing Impairment, Language Delay and Disorder, Learning Disorder or Disability, Mild Form Cerebral Palsy, Rubenstein-Taybi Syndrome, Sensory Processing Disorder and Speech Delay.

WHAT PEOPLE SAID ABOUT RUTHS TUTORING

. BEFORE MEETING RUTH, NEITHER OF MY BOYS (11 YRS - VARIED DIAGNOSIS - AUTISM, ADHD, DYSLEXIA, DYSGRAPHIA) COULD READ OR WRITE, BUT NOW BECAUSE OF THE INCREDIBLE WORK RUTH HAS DONE, THEY ARE WELL ON THEIR WAY…. WORDS CAN’T EXPRESS JUST HOW AMAZING IT IS WHEN YOU HEAR YOUR CHILDREN READ FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME (JM).

. WHEN MY CHILDREN (11 YRS AND 9 YRS - DYSLEXIA) WALKED THROUGH RUTH’S DOOR, THEY WERE BOTH STRUGGLING AND COULD BARELY READ. THANKS TO RUTH, THEY ARE NOW BOTH UNDERSTANDING SOUNDS, AND WORDS AND READING LITERARY BOOKS. RUTH IS DEVOTED, GENTLE BUT FIRM… SHE HAS AN EXCEPTIONAL WAY, IT’S NOT JUST THE FOUNDATIONS OF LITERACY AND NUMERACY, IT MORE - SHE TEACHES THE IMPORTANCE OF PATIENCE AND COMPASSION FOR SELF - SHE UNDERSTANDS EVERY CHILD HAS OBSTACLES TO FACE, AND IT IS WITHOUT JUDGEMENT THAT SHE HELPS IDENTIFY THESE ISSUES AND GUIDES THE CHILDREN AND… THE PARENTS TOO, SHINE A LIGHT AND HELP THE CHILDREN BE EMPOWERED IN THEIR UNIQUE AND INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCES (TH).

. RUTH GETS MORE OUT OF (CHILD, 16, RUBENSTEIN-TAYBI SYNDROME) THAN ANY OTHER THERAPIST EVER HAS… IT HAS LED TO SOME EXCEPTIONAL MOMENTS WITH (CHILD) (DT).

Over Ruth’s 28-year teaching career she tutored hundreds of children one on one with results similar to those above – she was 100% committed to her students. Both principals and teachers alike called Ruth asking how she got the kids advanced so quickly – they called her “the kid whisperer”.
